Founded in 1986, Lowcountry Land Trust works in partnership with landowners, communities, and conservation allies to permanently protect and steward the landscapes that define coastal South Carolina. With over 163,000 acres conserved across 17 counties, the Trust safeguards working farms, historic forests, wetlands, and scenic vistas that sustain the region’s ecological health and cultural heritage.
In addition to holding conservation easements, Lowcountry Land Trust actively manages iconic public spaces such as the Angel Oak Preserve and leads collaborative efforts to protect community treasures. In McClellanville, the Trust helped conserve Deerhead Oak Park, a centuries-old live oak that stands as a symbol of local identity, along with the 14.67-acre Graham Farm Road property, protecting essential green space and ecological buffers that are woven into the town’s historic character. These projects were made possible through funding from Charleston County’s Transportation Sales Tax (TST) program via the Greenbelt Fund and the Town of McClellanville reflecting a shared commitment to protecting the Lowcountry’s natural legacy.
Through strategic partnerships, thoughtful stewardship, and a deep commitment to place, Lowcountry Land Trust continues to champion land conservation as a tool for resilience, equity, and generational legacy across the Lowcountry.
